As magical as pixie dust, this enchanting Walt Disney adventure follows the talented, hot-headed fairy Tinker Bell in a new tale about the value of friendship. Imaginative ideas and exquisite execution are the key to the success of this second full length feature about the petite fairy born of laughter, and there is nothing as powerful as good storytelling and engaging characters. Timeless in its appeal, the colourful world of Pixie Hollow is buzzing with fresh ideas, fun and magic and is sure to delight every member of the family.
The leaves are turning gold, red, orange and yellow as autumn nears in Pixie Hollow. The little fairies who guide the changing seasons are busy at work and there is a flurry of activity. Tinker Bell, with her skin-tight green strapless short gown, blond hair scooped into a casual bun, transparent delicate wings, pixie ears and saucer blue eyes is an appealing protagonist and we happily follow her adventures to create the all-important new Sceptre that will coincide with the rare Blue Harvest Moon. The resulting blue pixie dust will restore the pixie dust tree (don't we all wish we had one of those?) and Tink is entrusted with the delicate, valuable shimmering blue moonstone. But of course everything goes wrong and impatience topples Tink's equilibrium as well as her friendship with her best friend and loyal dust-keeper Terence (voice of Jesse McCartney).
It is the extraordinary detail of the reality that makes the visuals such a joy. There's a cuckoo clock from which a blue cricket pops out, camomile tea is made using a pink hibiscus flower, there's a 21 butterfly salute, fish blowing bubbles and the Fairy Tale Theatre whose orchestra comprises frogs, beetles and ladybirds with cymbals. Tink's quest to find the magic mirror begins in a dandelion hot air balloon and there are some hilarious moments involving her new Blaze, a little flying caterpillar whose eye-rolls and body language express his thoughts more aptly than words. Watch out for the argumentative trolls at the Troll Bridge; they are a hoot. (It's not a Toll Bridge, it's a Troll Bridge...)
Once again Disney lives up to its promise; this is a sweetly charming film guaranteed to stimulate the imagination of young and old. Perhaps the success of the first film (Tinker Bell, released straight to DVD), has prompted a theatrical window for this sequel.
